How To Hunt / Kæmpehøjen is a poster measuring 70 x 100 cm displaying one of the works from Trine Søndergaard and Nicolai Howalt’s series How To Hunt.

From 2005 to 2009, visual artists Trine Søndergaard and Nicolai Howalt participated in autumn bird and game hunts and interpreted the primordial ritual through photography. The works in How To Hunt are not direct reproductions of hunters in the Danish landscape, but instead consist of several photographs that have been taken over time from the same point and subsequently assembled into one motif. Thus, if you look carefully, you will discover that both animals and people are repeated in the same landscape.

How To Hunt plays with our perception of both time and reality – and thus also with our perception of the photograph as the preservation of one moment. The hunting scenes and the recognizable, romantic landscapes are both classic themes in the history of art, from the cave paintings to the last half of the 19th century, such as in Krøyer’s Hunters of Skagen (1898).

How To Hunt has been exhibited at numerous institutions world wide and are among Trine Søndergaard and Nicolai Howalt’s most recognized work.

The series explores a classical and existential theme, at the same time deploying the creative potential of new photography to create a permeable boundary between documentary and art.
